CLIA highlights path to zero-carbon cruising in New Wave magazine

August 25, 2022 – The cruise industry’s pursuit of net zero-carbon cruising by 2050 is among sustainability initiatives showcased in a new specialist publication released today by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia.

Called New Wave, the glossy magazine highlights some of the technological advances being pioneered by cruise lines worldwide as they work to reduce emissions and increase the sustainability of the global cruise industry.

“Around the world, cruise lines are investing billions of dollars in new ships and new technologies that will make a huge difference when it comes to achieving a more sustainable cruise industry,” said CLIA Managing Director Australasia Joel Katz. “New alternative fuels, new sources of clean energy and new ways to protect our marine environment are already a reality and delivering results, but cruise lines are putting in an enormous amount of work to achieve more.”

The magazine outlines initiatives including new low-emission transitional fuels like LNG and technologies like exhaust gas cleaning systems, as well as efforts to develop future alternative fuels and power sources like biofuel, methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, hybrid propulsion and electric batteries.

Also featured are initiatives including wildlife protection projects, marine scientific studies, community development efforts and Indigenous tourism.

“The cruise industry represents less than 1% of world shipping, but it has taken a leading role in deploying new environmental measures aimed at reducing emissions and improving the sustainability of our operations,” Mr Katz said. “This magazine will highlight these efforts in a form that can be shared with our industry partners and the wider cruise community throughout Australasia.”

New Wave is available now and has been produced in partnership with Big Splash Media. It will be included in the upcoming summer edition of Cruise & Travel magazine and will be distributed to CLIA member travel agents and industry stakeholders as part of CLIA’s Cruise Month initiative in September.
