Tourism sector unfairly hit with passenger tax increase

Australia's travel industry has been dealt an unfair blow by the increased Passenger Movement Charge (PMC) announced in the Federal Budget, hampering its efforts to drive a revival in international tourism. Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said the increase in the PMC rate from $60 to $70 per person was an unreasonable added cost at a time when Australia's travel community was working hard to restore international visitation and support cruising's recovery.

Trainees set sail on a career in cruise

TAFE NSW and Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) have joined forces to launch a traineeship program to help students fast-track their careers in the cruise sector. The program enables trainees to complete a Certificate III in Travel or Certificate IV in Travel and Tourism with TAFE NSW and secure immediate employment with CLIA member cruise lines or travel agencies.

Cruise industry calls for freeze on passenger tax

Australia's cruise industry has joined calls for a freeze on the Passenger Movement Charge (PMC), warning that any further increase will be detrimental to the revival of international tourism across the country. Ahead of the Federal Budget, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has supported calls for the Australian Government to commit to a five-year freeze on the current PMC rate of $60 per person, which is charged to all Australians and international visitors departing Australia.

Australian cruise fans embrace revival

Cruising's revival in Australia has been resoundingly welcomed by cruise fans, with 457,200 Australians setting sail during the latter part of 2022, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) data shows. Despite a limited number of ships in the region and only a half year of local operations, CLIA's Source Market figure for 2022 shows the Australian cruise market is making a swift recovery from its pandemic suspension.
