New Zealand Leads the World in Cruise Growth

The number of New Zealanders taking an ocean cruise broke through the 100,000 barrier for the first time in 2018, reaching a total of 112,000 passengers in a year of world-leading growth. The record result was a 14.6 per cent increase on the previous year, giving New Zealand a growth rate well ahead of the world's largest and more established cruise markets including the USA (9.4 per cent) and Europe (3.3 per cent).

Growth Continues Despite Infrastructure Constraints

Australia has continued its long run of cruising growth with a total of 1.35 million Australians taking an ocean cruise during 2018, a slight increase on the previous year's record. However, growth slowed to just 0.9 per cent year-on-year, according to the 2018 Ocean Source Market report for Australia released today by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), reflecting capacity constraints associated with a shortage of berthing infrastructure in Sydney.

Auckland wharf decision secures tourism future

The international cruise industry has welcomed a decision to improve berthing facilities at Auckland's Queens Wharf, which will provide much needed certainty for New Zealand's cruise sector. Approval for the construction of two temporary mooring points known as dolphins will ensure Auckland is able to cater to all types of cruise vessels and allow continued growth in cruise-related tourism, which is worth NZ$491 million a year to the national economy.

Auckland set to break cruise records

Auckland is nearing the end of its most successful cruise season, having welcomed dozens of international ships and millions of dollars in visitor spending over the 2018-19 peak. By the end of April, Auckland will have hosted 39 different cruise ships which will have made 110 visits since the start of the international cruise season in October.This is a 20% increase on the number of visits made during last year's record period.
