Plan your journey: Helpful guides
Cruise FAQs
First-time cruisers often have practical questions about packing, onboard spending and everyday rules. The answers can vary between cruise lines, ships and destinations, but understanding the basics will help you prepare with confidence.
Here are answers to frequently asked questions about cruising. Always check the specific cruise line’s current guest information before departure.
What can you bring on a cruise ship?
You can generally bring normal holiday clothing, toiletries, medication, electronics and personal items, subject to luggage limits and security screening. Keep passports, travel documents, essential medication, valuables and a change of clothes in your carry-on bag because checked luggage may reach your cabin later.
Cruise lines maintain prohibited-items lists. Weapons, illegal substances, fireworks, candles, heating appliances and other fire hazards are typically not allowed. Rules for alcohol, non-alcoholic drinks, power boards, drones, sporting equipment and electrical appliances vary considerably.
Do not assume airline rules and cruise rules are identical. Review the cruise line’s official policy before packing, particularly if you plan to carry alcohol, medical equipment or unusual items.
Are meals included?
All cruise fares include meals in the main dining room and selected casual venues. Some ships also include snacks, basic room service or additional restaurants, while others charge for these services.
Specialty restaurants, premium menu items and certain dining experiences may cost extra. Tell the cruise line or travel agent about allergies and dietary needs before travel, then speak with dining staff onboard.
Are drinks included?
Soft drinks, specialty coffee, bottled water and alcoholic beverages may be charged individually or covered by a package. Before purchasing a drinks package, check daily limits, exclusions, service charges and whether all adults in the same cabin must buy it.
How do cruise tipping and gratuities work?
Gratuity arrangements vary by cruise line and market. Some fares include gratuities, some add a daily service charge to your onboard account, and others provide guidance on discretionary tipping.
Ask how gratuities apply to your fare before booking. Beverage, spa and specialty dining purchases may also attract an automatic service charge even when general gratuities are included.
How do I pay onboard?
All ships operate a cashless onboard account linked to your cruise card or wearable device. You can usually connect a credit or debit card or arrange a cash deposit. The ship’s onboard currency and card fees vary.
Review your account during the voyage so questions can be resolved before disembarkation. Notify your bank of overseas travel if appropriate.
Can I use my phone and Wi-Fi?
Ships commonly offer paid Wi-Fi packages, although speed and coverage may differ from home. Mobile phones can connect to maritime networks at sea, which may lead to expensive roaming charges.
Consider using flight mode and connecting to the ship’s Wi-Fi according to your provider’s instructions. Check your mobile plan before departure.
What happens if I am late returning to the ship?
The all-aboard time is earlier than the published departure time. Guests exploring independently are responsible for returning before this deadline. Ship-organised excursions generally coordinate with the vessel if delayed, subject to the cruise line’s terms.
Keep the ship’s contact details with you and use local time as instructed onboard. If you think you may be late, contact the number provided immediately.
Cruise rules and inclusions are not identical across brands. A CLIA specialist travel agent can help explain the details of your chosen fare and ship before you book.
